This is an awesome show! This is the legendary show that brought the Beach Boys out of 5 years of obscurity and allowed them to earn some much needed and deserved artistic credibility. According to legend, Bob Dylan was in the audience, and after the show he said of the Beach Boys, "Those guys are fuckin' good!". I agree with Dylan on that one. Give it a listen and hopefully you will, too.

I can't get enough of these guys! The Postmarks hail from Miami, Florida, the last place you'd expect a band like this to come out of. Pretty melodies, and a pretty singer with a pretty voice...listening to their music makes me feel like I've died and gone to heaven...

The band members include multi-instrumentalists Christopher Moll and Jon Wilkins, singer Tim Yehezkely (a woman with a guy's name), keyboardist Jeff Wagner, and bassist Brian Hill.
If you like The Beach Boys, Burt Bacharach, Van Dyke Parks, Stereolab, The High Llamas, Camera Obscura, The Zombies, The Association, The Cowsills, any other 60s pop or indie pop, or just good music in general, you'll probably like The Postmarks.

Might be a while before I post some new stuff here, as my laptop with all my Beach Boy bootlegs crapped out on me before I could burn all of my stuff to CD. Hopefully I can get my computer fixed soon and I hope I didn't lose any data. Don't worry, I've got some stuff on CD, I can still manage to post something every now and again.

You know what, I'll still post regularly, but there won't be as much music until I get my comp fixed...might be a while as I like to put things off, and because getting a computer fixed may be quite expensive.

So anyway, I'm not deleting the blog. Enjoy what I've posted so far, and hopefully I'll get some more stuff up on here.

EDIT: This was already posted over at Triff's blog, Triffids on the Beach. But, thanks to an anonymous commenter, we've now got the studio demos for That Lucky Old Sun here at this blog. too. I guarantee you'll love them. Forever She'll Be My Surfer Girl and Midnight's Another Day were both already available on Brian Wilson's website. Be sure to catch Brian on tour this summer if he actually comes to a place near you. He's doing some shows in the UK. He's also doing the northeast United States and eastern Canada. And I also think he's doing some shows in L.A.

This has become my new favorite Beach Boys tribute album. Its a Japanese-only release which features nothing but indie artists. Before I heard this the only artists on it that I'd heard of before are Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, musician and producer Jim O'Rourke (who was a member of Sonic Youth for the first half of this decade, and produced Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot), and The Olivia Tremor Control, whom I believe are on the Elephant 6 label. This one is definitely worth the listen.

Hey everyone, its time for some new stuff. This is a muddy soundboard recording from a Seattle show in 1970. By muddy, I mean REALLY muddy. What's special about this one is that it was one of a series of concerts when Mike Love was temporarily committed to a mental hospital, and taking his place at the concerts was none other than BRIAN WILSON!!!!!! You can hardly make out Brian's voice in this show, but he's there. Carl and Al handle Mike's leads for this show.

The Cocaine Sessions/Hamburger Tapes

For those of you not familiar with this boot, it is a recording of Brian and Dennis circa 1981, both coked up, badly playing some songs they wrote at a piano, also includes an interview with Brian conducted by Les Chan. The song "City Blues" would be released on Brian's 2004 album Gettin' In Over My Head, and "Oh Lord" was demo'd for The Beach Boys '85 but never made the final cut.

Ready for a Beach Boys Party!? Sorry, but I can't take anyone to one of those, but I can whip up some outtakes from the album, "The Beach Boys Party!", not quite as good as an actual party put on by the Beach Boys, but is still quite good. This is UM 10, the alternate Party! album.

Hey folks, this is the 2nd installment of a sporadic series of posts I like to call the "Cool Band Alert". This one is about one of my all time favorite bands (aside from the Beach Boys), Barenaked Ladies. Fronted by singer-guitarists Steven Page and Ed Robertson, and filled out by bassist-singer Jim Creeggan, singer-multi-instrumentalist Kevin Hearn, and drummer Tyler Stewart, this band from Toronto has recorded and released some of the best rock and pop music of the past 15+ years. Singer-keyboardist-percussionist Andy Creeggan, younger brother of bassist Jim Creeggan, played on the Ladies' first 2 albums. Their influences are wide-ranging, with each member of the group bringing in their own tastes and styles. A couple months ago I edited together several of the musical tracks with the talking between the songs from the Michigan State concerts on The Live Box and made my own "live album". What I basically did was took the second Michigan concert, severely cut back the talking parts (Mike Love is not as funny as he would like to think), then edited the leftover talking parts onto the ends of the musical tracks, I cut off the false start on You're So Good To Me, and I added in Wouldn't It Be Nice from the first Michigan concert (wasn't performed at the 2nd one), and whala! The Beach Boys Live at Michigan State 1966.

In a little over a week will mark the unveiling of ascrodin's SMiLE '08. Just for a teaser I'm posting the tracklisting. Heroes and Villains is 10 minutes long, The Elements is 15 minutes. I also made an 8 minute version of Good Vibrations. I "cooked up" a pretty crazy outro after the child is the father segment of Surf's Up, extending that song to about 8 minutes. For other songs, I used talking parts from the Psychedelic Reel, Vegetable Arguments, the Chicago Cab Driver, the Basketball Game, Bob Gordon's Real Trip, etc. Brian asks Denny for some hash joints and wonders whether the boys are feeling the acid yet all the while George falls into his French Horn during Surf's Up. During the tag to Heroes and Villains Mike asks for some sexual pleasure devices and Carl says to bring Mike a bag of money. Brian gets stuck in a mic. Van Dyke Parks and David Anderle order ice cream from a tinkling piano. I did something "wild" to pretty much every song. Its about 80 minutes of craziness, and in my opinion, sounds a million times better than my other SMiLE mix.

Hey hey hey, this isn't Fat Albert, its just little old me here at the blog. Happy belated New Year, hope Xmas, Hanukah, Kwanzaa, Ramandan, or any other holiday you blog visitors celebrate went well. Just checking in, seeing how the blog's been doing without me. I'm on a public internet connection right now and my laptop has limited battery power, so I'm going to wait until I'm back at college with reliable internet access to post any new downloads. Don't worry, it'll be worth the wait. I've made a new SMiLE mix, hopefully better sounding than my last one (sorry about all that reverb-I know its made my ears ring pretty bad). At any rate, it will be quite an interesting listen. Look forward to that, and a lot more good stuff, probably starting the last week of January. Then it will be back to regular updates again. No, its not the Beach Boys (even though the Beach Boys are pretty cool). If you like the Beach Boys there may be a slight chance you'd like these guys. I'm talking about a band called Camera Obscura. They are a Scottish indie pop band, from Glasgow I believe. I just discovered them very recently. They are grrrrreat. The lead singer, Tracyanne Campbell, has a beautiful voice, and is not that bad lookin', either. Some of their songs sound like they could come straight off of Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!!).

EDIT: I was wrong on the Summer Days comparison. Camera Obscura's songs are a little too sad for Summer Days. They are more like Pet Sounds meets Belle and Sebastian meets a female Morrissey.

Hello again folks, starting either tomorrow or Wednesday I will be leaving college to go back home for Thanksgiving break (gorging myself with turkey in remembrance of the slaughter and exploitation of Native Americans by conservative white religious zealots who got kicked out of England), and will not have access to the internet, therefore, no more new posts after tomorrow or Wednesday. Don't worry, I will be back next Sunday or Monday with some more Beach Boys stuff. I may make a 60s rarities "mix" and one with stuff from the 80s/90s/00s pretty much in the same vein as the 70s rarities "mix". Adult Child

Hey everybody,
I got a new post up in here. Its none other than Brian Wilson's unreleased follow-up to "Love You", "Adult Child". Personally, I like this one better than "Love You", if only because the lyrics are not so child-like and demented. The only weak tracks here are "Hey Little Tomboy" and "On Broadway". This was recorded in 1977-78 after "Love You" was finished but before it got released. This album was rejected by Warner Brothers, but I wish it would've been released in '78 instead of the MIU Album. "H.E.L.P. Is On The Way", "It's Over Now", "Games Two Can Play", and "Still I Dream of It" were eventually released on the 1993 Good Vibrations Box Set, "Hey Little Tomboy" was recycled for the MIU Album, and "Shortenin' Bread" came out on 1979's L.A. (Light Album).

My SMiLE Mix

This is a SMiLE mix I made about a year ago. It's not the greatest sounding one in the world, for example, in some places it skips between mono and stereo, and I think I added too much reverb to a lot of the songs. But it is pretty comprehensive, incorporating almost every major song recorded during the SMiLE sessions. Some highlights include 10 minute versions of "Heroes and Villains" and "Vega-Tables".
A question to ponder: Has anyone ever noticed how "All Day" and "Aren't You Glad" from Wild Honey sound almost alike?

We all know that every die hard Beach Boys/Brian Wilson fan wants to get their hands on as much of the original SMiLE sessions that they are able to grab, but what about SMiLE's often overlooked sibling, Smiley Smile? Do Beach Boys fans ever clamor to hear the Smiley Smile sessions? If there is anyone who ever did want to hear them, this is the perfect opportunity. Purple Chick SMiLE

Alrighty then, folks, I've decided to put up Purple Chick's SMiLE as the first ever download from this blog. Seems appropriate since this blog is named after a SMiLE track. Now this is no ordinary SMiLE comp. This is the original Beach Boys 66/67 recordings edited together and sequenced to sound like Brian Wilson's 2004 SMiLE. In fact, some of the gaps left over after all the Beach Boys recordings were edited together and filled in with short little sections from Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE. All the songs are presented in fabulous stereo.
